Does Adobe Flex really mean Flash?

Jason Harris - Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Well maybe it did a few years back, but not today.  Flex is a powerful application development platform that can 'deploy' applications to any number of platforms.  When you hear Flex, you normally think about the "out of the box" Esri viewer that has become so widespread.  It is much more than that.

Flex as of version 4.5, along with Flash Builder (the development tool or IDE) can now deploy applications to a number of different platforms.  You can write your application in Flex and deploy it to the web (think Esri viewer) or to all of the major mobile operating systems.  Yes, you read that correctly - you can write your code once, and deploy it to all of the popular app stores with little or no changes.  These apps can be created to take advantage of all that the hardware has to offer - camera, GPS, accelerometer, etc.  Flex is quickly becoming the go to development platform for mobile devices.
